Roy Might Kill Tarver By Darren Carter ARJ Sports Executive Editor What round will Tarver get K.O.ed? Who do you think? November 5, 2003
Only one time have I seen "the R.J." "The R.J." is Roy Jones alter ego, like Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde, "the R.J." is Roy's Mr. Hyde. He displayed his deadly evil twin in the rematch against Montel Griffith after he was disqualified in the first bout after an inadvertent foul, that cost Roy his titles and put the only blimish on his record. R.J. came out in the return match and blistered Montel and knocked him down 3 times in the 1st round eventually ending the fight. This was something Roy had never displayed in any of his previous fights, Roy masterfully outboxed all his previous foes. He clearly seemed disturbed, because all during the build up preceeding the rematch, all the Roy Jones haters we saying that Roy was losing it, he wasn't the best pound for pound, he hasn't fought any body up to that point, all the same mumbo jumbo. Roy at the post fight interview with Larry Merchant, said "Larry you made me do this." Referring to his distruction of Griffith. He said, "all the things that you wrote about me, all the things you said, you gonna mess around and make me kill this boy by accident." He went on to say that, when motivated "the R.J." can distroy anyone like this, but he preferred not getting in the ring mad, because he really didn't intend to hurt anybody in he ring.
Now preceeding this fight with Antonio Tarver, Tarver has been running off at the mouth, talking about how Jones has been ducking him for 3 years, and the reason why he moved up to Heavyweight is to get away from him. This cat is on drugs. Antonio Tarver at best is a mediorce Light Heavyweight. He is prancing around, with his 2 title belts, that Roy vacated when he won the Heavyweight title, like he is really the $hit. The fight is billed as "It's Personal", and it clearly is personal to Roy because, at the fight promotion press conference, Tarver was trying to grand stand, holding his title belts in the air, saying he's the champ, like he beat the man who beat the man, to earn the title. Roy said, he's bigger than belts, he has enough title belts now, that he coordinates his outfits around which on he wants to wear. He said, he's going to whup Antonio Tarver and he can keep the ragged ass belts. He's fighting this fight because Tarver seems to have forgot who the real champion is. Roy truly is motivated for this fight. Roy is bigger, Roy is faster, Roy is stronger, Roy has all the advantages. Tarver has nothing, I mean he has nothing going for him. Tarver should have let the sleeping dog lie, because Roy might have carried him into the latter rounds. But now that he has gone and opened his big mouth. People that order this fight on Pay-Per-View, get your popcorn early, it's going to be a short night, be expect another visit from "the R.J."
